What do you recommend for managing passwords?

Protecting highly confidential information is not the primary motivation of browsers like Microsoft Edge, Firefox, Safari and Google Chrome. Although storing passwords in your browser is convenient, we discourage this practice. Convenience results in valuable passwords being stored in multiple browsers, on multiple accounts, on multiple devices.

We recommend migrating all your passwords into one an independent, secure and specialised password manager. We recommend and use Keeper or 1Password. The business version centralises policy management in two levels, making it ideal for managing staff. Passwords can be organised into folders with different sharing permissions. Both tests your password against those exposed on the dark-web and prompt you to rotate these risky passwords. Bother Keeper and LastPass have mobile phone apps enabling users to carry passwords anywhere.

Install your new password manager in all your current browsers and disable the browsers password tools and prompts.

Installation often includes an option to import password from your browsers. Otherwise, export your passwords from all the browsers manually and import them into your new password manager. When you are satisfied that all your passwords are in the password manager, delete and deactivate the password features from all your browsers. Organise your passwords into shared folders and give your team access to passwords they need.

If you’re looking for a budget alternative with basic features, Synology have a great product:

Using a password manager will save your team from paying for support tickets, getting passwords reset or retrieved.
